FAQs about Calcium Supplements

Why is calcium needed? How does it benefit you?

Calcium plays an important structural role in the development and maintenance of bone tissues and is the most abundant mineral in the human body. Although it’s plentiful, more than 75 percent of all adults and children still need to have a supplemental daily calcium intake, because the human body cannot produce enough of this essential mineral. Most people take only half of what is needed in order to maintain proper calcium levels.

Ninety-nine percent of the human body’s calcium is held within our bones and teeth while the remaining one percent is distributed within our blood and soft tissues. This one percent distribution is consumable and so vital to a wide variety of body functions. Without enough calcium, the body then takes what it needs from the calcium deposited in bones and teeth in order to compensate. This will result in slow deterioration that eventually may lead to more challenging health problems. The body also excretes calcium daily through the shedding of skin, hair, nails and sweat, in addition to monthly menstrual blood. Therefore, calcium supplementation, as supplied in the D-Cal
® chewable tablets, provides the necessary replenishment of this lost calcium.*

Apart from giving strength to your bones, calcium is necessary for many body functions such as healing wounds, regulating heartbeat, improving blood clotting and maintaining permeability of blood capillaries in the body. Calcium-rich diets may also reduce the risk of colon cancer, obesity and high blood pressure that occurs during pregnancy.

Why is calcium especially important for women and children?

Calcium is especially vital for women. About 80 percent of women in the United States do not consume an adequate amount of calcium in their diet to preserve healthy bone composition. Optimum bone density is achieved during late adolescence in both men and women, normally around age 30. After around 35 years of age, bones tend to become thinner as time passes.

Continued loss of calcium stored within bones will inevitably result in osteoporosis, a debilitating condition found primarily in women. It’s normally caused by the weakening of bone density, genetics or prior bone damage. Osteoporosis occurs with no sign of symptoms or pain and typically goes unnoticed until a fracture occurs (normally in the hip, spine, or wrist) and then a patient knows about her condition. Also, due to a decrease in estrogen levels, menopausal women are at a greater risk of bone loss. During their entire life, women lose about one-third of their bone density, as compared to one-fifth for men. Statistics show that one out of two women will experience an osteoporosis fracture in their lifetime. It’s important to take steps to prevent this serious condition before it starts. D-Cal
® provides an excellent source of calcium for osteoporosis prevention.

In addition to women, children also have an increased need for calcium, especially during childhood and teenage years, because that’s when their bones grow the fastest. More than half of the boys and girls in their teenage years do not get enough calcium in their diet. With increased calcium intake, children can build stronger and healthier bones, and the benefit of having sufficient calcium carries over into their adult years. Further, calcium also allows teeth, gums and jawbones to grow healthy.

Although women and children have a greater need for calcium, men also face the risks of osteoporosis and colon cancer. Nearly two million men suffer from osteoporosis in the United States, and one-third of them are over the age of 75. Although osteoporosis-related fractures are most often associated with women, they tend to be equally serious with men.

To summarize, everyone can benefit from increased calcium intake.

Why is pure calcium so critical?

Lead is a naturally occurring toxin present in the water, soil and atmosphere. This element can produce adverse effects on the human body: to the nervous, blood, renal and reproductive systems. Calcium carbonate is a natural element from mines where there is a potential for lead impurity to be carried over to the material. As a result of this, the Food and Drug Administration, United States Pharmacopoeia and National Academy of Sciences Food Chemicals Codex have established standards for the level of lead that is acceptable in foods and supplements. According to the FDA, the tolerable level of lead consumption for adults per day should be 750 micrograms for men and women and 250 micrograms for pregnant women. However, long-term safety relative to the lead effect has yet to be fully evaluated.

The calcium carbonate used in D-Cal
® is purified through a special process called “precipitation.” As a result, the lead content in D-Cal® is many times lower than the limits required by the FDA, and it also conforms to the standard of California Proposition 65, which is the most stringent governmental lead requirement today. The unprecedented purity and safety provided by D-Cal® remain extremely desirable in today’s market.*

What is the advantage of putting calcium and vitamin D together?

Vitamin D is crucial in the human body because of its ability to regulate the body’s calcium balance. It facilitates the absorption and release of calcium into the bloodstream. Vitamin D is mainly produced in our skin with daily exposure to sunlight. However, it’s difficult to obtain enough vitamin D through natural foods and sunlight alone. The vitamin D included in D-Cal
® gives you the added nutrients that your body needs, especially to facilitate the absorption of calcium after you ingest the product. Just like insufficient calcium levels may lead to osteoporosis, lack of enough dietary vitamin D can also result in serious health conditions. For example, hypocalcemia indicated by insufficient calcium in the blood is sometimes a result of vitamin D deficiency. In addition, combining calcium with vitamin D may reduce the risk of colon cancer and help the elderly protect their teeth density.*
